NY Times Full Page Takeout Details Drug Scourge Rise  E-mail
Addiction Treatment Industry Newswire

01/20/2016 -ATIN - As we have been busy in recent years covering mergers, new center openings and expansions by the dozens and things like NIMBY, we here at Treatment Magazine have of course been following the drug curse epidemic, but perhaps not close enough because even we were shocked at a full page take out in today's NY Times detailing a massive increase, mostly in the five years to 2014, of drug overdose mortality - which the Centers for Disease Control compares to the steep rise in the HIV epidemic decades ago. When we started publishing Treatment Magazine in 2005, alcohol abuse mortality had for years typically outstripped all illegal drugs combined. That's probably not the case anymore since CDC says 47,000 people died from drug overdoses in 2014, compared to 30,000 for alcohol that year. We cannot do better than today's NY Times report, so we, humbled by our insignificance, just provide here (below) a link to that story for our readers. And another link to a story Treatment Magazine did a while back explaining the unintended consequences of a the crackdown on pill mills that has led to this crisis, as street heroin has become super cheap and massively more powerful as it is often laced with the powerful fentanyl drug, 100x more potent than morphine and that is pretty much impervious to a typical dose of narcan. Narcan is the miracle drug that almost immediately reverses the cardio-pulmonary slowdowns that typically lead to opiate mortality and that many police cruisers now carry as a matter of policy. And we throw in a couple more past Treatment Magazine stories for good measure, with all of them below adding up to a tale of an abysmal addiction treatment policy failure in this nation that hopefully the next round of elections in November will start to address in a supercharged way.
